The obvious point that the legal press always misses and firms never mention in their recruitment brochures is that there simply isn't the capacity for 100 NQs to become 100 partners after 8 - 10 years as associates with a firm. The law firm business model is a well-defined pyramid with frightening attrition and only the lucky few sneaking into the top ranks (particularly in the current market). Therefore, over time, very few associates will have a choice and alternative careers will become more highly prized.
