Seems perfectly justifiable to me as a way of ensuring that the public is not prey to an assortment of sociopaths who wish to bestride the courtroom floors, waxing not-so-lyrical. The sole shame is that crimes of violence are not sentenced as robustly, I'd say, but we'd probably need to greatly increase prison capacity to achieve that.
