Online defamation cases more than double thanks to social media

Comment

"Only a thin skinned buffoon would sue over some on-line comments." What if a small business is slaughtered by an online blogger without justification or evidence?! If a piece was published in a local newspaper to the same effect, litigation would be inevitable- as without it, it is likely the small business owner would be out of business. Why should it not be the case if sombeody does exactly the same thing online- but to an audience of millions, which would have a much more damaging effect than a publication in a local newspaper. They should have a legal redress for this surely! Similarly if an individual is defamed online without justification they should also have legal redress- surely that is what the law is designed to do. People should realise that online blogs, tweets etc can have a massively detrimental effect on a business or individual, without justification or evidence.
