Mature candidates evince true grit
I'm 52 and currently approaching the end of my 2nd year studying for my law degree and so far am heading for a 2:1. I was apprehensive at the start of my first year with all the bright young things at uni. They didn't have a lifetime of baggage crammed into their brain that had to make way for the deluge of legal information that has to be retained. However, I have over 25 years experience as an insurance broker and know how life and business work and found I could easily apply my skills to learning and applying the law. In fact my age and experiences have been a huge benefit. I will happily speak up at all seminars or in lectures while everyone else is looking down and shuffling papers hoping they won't be asked questions! I have found a voracious appetite for learning and love law immensely. Plus my experience in dealing with directors of multi-million pound companies in the past means I am not phased in meetings or look too young to know anything! My fellow students will gain in confidence over time, once they start their training contracts but I will be ready the moment my LPC is completed. The problem I know I will have is that a younger person will have a lot more working years available to them whereas I will have maybe only 20 years + (I hope). However I know I will be able to give 20 years of 100% hard work and total commitment, - I've had my children and don't want just a job but an all consuming career doing something I love! It'll be interesting to see if I can get a training contract and whoever gets me will be getting a lot more than just a law graduate!
