Revealed: the gender pay gulf dividing UAE counsel

Comment

I'm confident that there are no more than a handful of senior in-house lawyers in the region making upwards of GBP400k as reported here. 95% of regional GCs don't even make that number in US dollars; the market rate for GC roles is between $250-350k depending on sector, a salary around $650k is very rare indeed. The "gender gap" looks as stark as it does because this quoted top-end figure is practically an anomaly. Another factor skewing the results is that there are comparatively very few top in-house jobs based in the region, as most international institutions still house the majority of their legal teams in their London or NY HQs. As for living and working in Saudi, it really isn't that bad. The expat compounds, though expensive, are like self-contained 5* resorts and if you spend a couple of years there you will almost certainly leave healthier and wealthier than when you arrived.
