Not so sure that "the larger firms that have institutionalised clients have no need to develop their business online in terms of chasing mandates". The fact that the critical blog post is written by the GC of the FT tells you something and, as Tim will admit, he's new to twitter and blogging himself. If you go to any technology conference or get to know the key influencers on twitter, it becomes apparent that social media has massive disruptive potential for any large centralised and bureaucratic organisation.
