Happy to help: Eleanor Doohan, Asda Stores

Comment

While Doohan is happy to get her hands dirty, she expects the same from her external law firms, with lawyers from McGrigors, Pinsents and Ward Hadaway drafted in to work in stores over the Christmas period. “We don’t demand this [from our external lawyers],” Doohan emphasises. “We ask them and they love it. One of our lawyers said, ’I’ll only do it if I can be on the checkout’.” This illustrates the obsequious lengths to which many law firms will go to curry favour with clients and by the same token, why working for such a firm can be so unpleasant. In this economy, the lawyer who 'happily' shows up for his shift at the cash register may find himself working alongside some of his former colleagues, who are toiling at the store on a more sustained basis.
