The moment the first name is announced, the grumbles about whether the amount donated to the charities by each nominator has influenced the results wil begin. Let me pre-empt this by saying that I think the donation system is a great way for the profession to help those in a less fortunate position. I am sure the Lawyer will make sure that those who count in the donations are fully segregated from the judging panel or those who have any influence on the shortlists. This is right as the person making the application is the donor - not the person who could win the prize. Seems better to tackle these issues before sour grapes get involved.
