As a legal consultant operating in India, I can say that the Indian legal profession is aware of the issues that lie in the future as the progress towards liberalisation takes place. Having been in India for two years, there is a difference between the western and indian legal culture. My personal experience is that firms want to learn about how western firms operate but they do not necessarily want to copy their practices. However, they wish to develop next practice which is appropriate for India. There is a great deal of change coming but I am confident that the Indian legal profession will emerge as a very different animal in the next 5 to 10 years. This is based on my experience of the last 20 years of consulting work in the UK and US. Exciting times.
