Headline

Opinion: BSkyB vs EDS: time to rethink IT services contracts

Comment

Interesting article. It's about time IT suppliers were brought to task on their charlatan behaviour. As an IT professional, I am sick of witnessing large IT programmes fail and suppliers running rings around their customers. Customers get caught up in contractual deadlines with their suppliers and in the web of software development – often with a view (likely to be as a result of the sales pitch) that the technology is the silver bullet. They forget about the need to maintain business operations throughout transition from the as-is to to-be business process state via iterative IT software releases. Technology is an enabler of business operations – and yet suppliers are more interested in banging the software out than they are about ensuring that business operations run smoothly (plus they take much longer than originally estimated to do so) – and thus technology ruins business operations rather than acting as an enabler to them. IT delivery is not rocket science – it's about time it was ran and measured by a profession rather than by a bunch of cowboys.
