Offshore
7 November 2011
As globalisation gathers pace, this week’s Offshore Special Report has a cross-border focus. With a slew of negative reports about the use of offshore jurisdictions, lawyers point out that the offshore world relies heavily on flows of work from onshore markets and that onshore policymakers must also work to increase transparency and accountability.
The report looks at a number of sectors that are, quite literally, taking off at the moment. David Cooke and Jason Piney report from Bermuda on the resurgence in aviation finance, while Steven Quayle says registering aircraft in the Isle of Man is hugely beneficial.
Stephen Moverley Smith QC explains why a recent case in the Cayman Islands has implications for the offshore trust industry, and Cayman litigation is also under Anne Todd’s microscope as disputes over directors’ duties reach the courts.
From the Channel Islands, Jason Romer predicts that Guernsey’s new image rights law will give the jurisdiction an edge in attracting celebrities. Guernsey’s trust law is also under scrutiny by Robert Shepherd and Matthew Guthrie, while Nigel Pearmain and Chris Le Quesne review Jersey’s securities interest regime.
In other reports, Andrew Quinn and Mark Western argue the case for company structures straddling jurisdictions and Claire Milne says the Isle of Man is leading the way in clean technology.
