Robert Griffiths QC of 4-5 Grays Inn Square has beaten off several rivals to become counsel to the inquiry investigating a proposal to make the South Downs one of only two national parks to be established in the last half-century. Although the set declined to comment on Griffiths fees, they are likely to be substantial considering the fact that he will have to reject all other work for the duration of the inquiry, which is estimated to be 18 months. It will be the longest and most high-profile inquiry of its kind. Although his title is counsel to the inquiry, Griffiths is officially acting for the Countryside Agency, which he also acted for in the recently completed New Forest National Park Inquiry. He was counsel for the Environment Agency in the long-running Dibden Bay Terminal Inquiry and represented the Home Office in the Strangeways Inquiry. A chambers spokesman said: "[Griffiths] appointment was the result of a rigorous tendering process in accordance with competitive tendering regulations."
