Public law

The standards expected of public bodies have never been higher. Combined with heightened public awareness and an increasingly aggressive commercial sector, this means authorities need to be clear about the structures and relationships they create, rigorous in their decision making and robust in defending challenges.

We see public law as an enabler. Our aim is to use public law principles to help you achieve your social and commercial objectives within a robust legal and governance structure.

Our experience covers the whole range of public law, from establishment and powers all the way to complex outsourcing, public projects and income generation. We also advise on public procurement, competition, state aid and judicial review.

Our strong public law team has three partners and 21 other staff, with further specialisation across the sectors. Clients that we’ve helped include central and local government, higher- and further-education establishments, NDPBs, major utilities and the NHS. In total, we act for more than 300 public bodies.

The leading independent legal directories praise our local government practice for its ‘sound knowledge of the public sector’. Our education practice is ‘head and shoulders above its competitors’. In health, we show ‘high levels of responsiveness and quick turnaround times’. Our procurement and projects lawyers have the ‘tenacity, drive and ability to provide pragmatic solutions to complex problems’.
