The growth of the independent pro bono group run by law firms continues apace. Now the group is preparing to hire a full-time director to get the venture off the ground. It is excellent to see solicitors taking such matters into their own hands independently from the Law Society, which has been unable to get to grips with the subject. The society is said to be supportive of the venture, but its lack of vision on this matter is startling.
The pro bono group is planning to offer practical support and encouragement to those undertaking such work. It seems a simple and logical task; no one will be forced to do good works. Instead, those who want to do it will have some backup. For the Law Society, the politics of the situation clouds any vision.
