Press fails in court reports

Because of shifting news values and cutbacks to editorial budgets, the press is failing to cover key civil and criminal court cases. Cases reflecting societal inequalities, corruption and injustice are going unreported.

While every national newspaper last month carried the prosecution of It girl Tara Palmer-Tomkinson for speeding, cases revealing police corruption, pension fraud and local authority incompetency routinely fall through the net. The result is that criminals escape public exposure, victims have no public acknowledgement of suffering and the police receives no recognition for catching criminals.
