Intellectual property

The Intellectual Property Department at Walker Morris has established a truly seamless one-stop service for clients, advising on all types of contentious and non-contentious matters, including licensing, merchandising and securitisation, patent and other IP litigation, and research and technology collaboration.

The team also contains the Trade Marks & Designs Department, which is staffed by a large team of specialist European trademark attorneys handling all aspects of the management and recordal of UK, community and international designs and trademark portfolios.

A key to the department’s success is the close working relationships that it has established with practices in other jurisdictions. Clients appreciate the importance for their IP strategy of obtaining effective, cogent advice both within the UK and overseas. The quality of the department’s connections is widely recognised and is reflected in a number of leading corporations asking the group to manage the appointment and monitoring of foreign counsel.

Chambers and the Legal 500 regularly praise the quality of the department with comments such as: ‘The IP team at Walker Morris had an outstanding year with a series of noteworthy cases clearly showcasing the firm’s strength. Department head Patrick Cantrill has an impressive breadth of experience and is backed up by a highly qualified team of specialists.’

The department has had a number of successes in the High Court, Court of Appeal and the recently reformed Patents County Court. Notably, in 2010, it obtained for its client, Hotel Cipriani, the largest award ever given by a UK court in a trademark infringement action.
