Independent Energy, the largest independent provider of gas and electricity in the UK, has decided to move some of its legal work in-house.
The move will come as a blow to Masons and Birmingham-based Martineau Johnson which have handled the majority of the company's legal work in the past.
The Solihull-based company has taken on two lawyers, both with experience of the energy industry.
John Stubbs will be the company's chief legal counsel. He has worked as a consultant to the company for several years and previously acted for Central Electricity Generating Board, National Power and Scottish Power.
Eddie McCabe will work in a support role, moving from his role as company solicitor at South Staffordshire Water, where he started his career in customer services before qualifying as a solicitor.
Independent Energy chief executive John Sulley says: "The creation of a legal department is a result of the rapid growth of the firm. John and Eddie bring industry experience to their new roles and this will be an important asset to the team."
