Norton Rose has adivised Stena Line for more than 25 years and was asked in March 1998 to deal with investigations by the EC, UK and French competition authorites into a merger of Stena Line and P&O's short sea operations. This joint venture for operative cross-Channel ferries was first approved by the EC in January 1999. This year, Norton Rose was asked to act for the company again and successfully handled Stena Line's application to the European Community for renewed clearance of its joint venture with P&O. The EC publicly favoured the application. Norton Rose and Stena Line go back a long way. After more than a quarter of a century handling Stena's financing, M&A, regulatory advice, tax litigation, employment, pensions, and commercial shipping contracts work, relations between the two remain strong.
