Pinsent Curtis Biddle has won new instructions from Ikea following the Swedish home furnishing retailer's annual review of its UK legal panel
Ikea general counsel Christer Thordson said that particular attention was paid to costs this year, after a perceived "dramatic rise in rates" at UK firms.
Thordson believes that high rates charged to financial institutions on mergers and acquisitions have pushed up rates in other practice areas such as employment law.
He said: "While financial institutions often have success fees for particular deals, a law firm still gets paid regardless of the outcome."
Pinsents was invited to tender for a place on the panel after a personal contact in Ikea's legal department recommended the firm. Corporate partner Jeremy Phillips will be responsible for the relationship after a successful pitch. The firm has yet to do any work for Ikea.
Other firms on the panel include Denton Wilde Sapte (insurance), Lovells (corporate, property, tax and finance), Manches (media), Norton Rose (finance), Shoosmiths (property) and Simmons & Simmons (property and EU regulation).
