Pinsents on Sussex Uni’s first panel

Pinsent Masons has picked up the main role on the University of Sussex’s first-ever legal panel following advice to the institution on dealing with student activism.

Nicky Hart, head of the firm’s Birmingham-based universities practice, and London-based litigation partner Stefan Paciorek are leading a team of four lawyers advising the university on employment, constitutional, student, academic, research, international, estates, IP and technology transfer matters.

Pinsents was one of six firms asked to pitch for three panel places after having advised on employment matters on an informal basis for the past two years. Pinsents recently advised the university on how to deal with a sit-in protest at the Student Union. Students were protesting on Israel/Palestine issues
and the university was reportedly advised to “take the negotiation route” with the campaigners.

Eversheds’ universities practice, which is managed by Manchester-based partner John Boardman, has won a panel place to advise Sussex Uni on international matters. This follows Evesheds’ recent appointment by Liverpool John Moores University, also solely on an international ticket.

DMH Stallard is understood to have won the spot to advise Sussex Uni on local issues.
