Pinsent Masons staff have delivered a rebuke to the firm’s management after survey results revealed a significant proportion of respondents were confused about the promotion process and felt detached from the business.
One year on from the merger, Pinsents conducted a staff satisfaction survey, which around half of the firm completed.
Of the 700 responses, more than half said they did not understand how to get promoted or compensated relative to their colleagues.
The survey also showed that a number of staff members felt detached from the business and the central management team and were not fully informed about firm strategy.
HR director Kate Parr, who is set to retire from the firm later this year, told The Lawyer that the survey results were mostly positive, but that an action plan was required to address the complaints.
“We’ve spoken to all of the department heads and managers about the survey and they’ve listened to the feedback from the staff and agreed on action plans specific to the practice area,” she said. “To some extent it’s to be expected that some staff are not feeling close to the business, and that’s because we’ve grown so much as a result of the merger.
“Deeper engagement is an issue that’s being actively addressed.”
Staff have also expressed concern about their office environment, particularly offices in Old Broad Street and Birmingham.
“The planned office move to CityPoint and the refurbishment of the Birmingham office building will be a major improvement,” the firm’s new HR director Jonathan Bond said.
As a percentage of the firm, 33 per cent of partners completed the survey, while 43 per cent of senior associates also responded.
