Petronas zooms to head of Field Fisher client list

Malaysian Fortune 500 company Petronas is set to become Field Fisher Waterhouse's largest client

The company has instructed the firm on a $500m (£327.7m) project to develop a new superbike and racing team. Field Fisher had previously only performed trademark filings for the Malaysian oil giant, but won this huge 10-year project against competition from a list of magic circle and US firms that included Clifford Chance, Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer and LeBoeuf Lamb Greene & MacRae.
Petronas has leapfrogged Accenture, Thomas Cook, Mitsubishi and the Ordnance Survey to top the firm's client list. Mark Abell, head of brands, technology media and telecoms and the project's lead partner, will spend most of his time in Kuala Lumpur working on the superbike and racing team launch.
“Petronas is really a new client for us as we were only doing international trademark filings before,” said Abell. He added that this project has been the gateway to other big-ticket Petronas work, such as a large insurance litigation that the firm has just been instructed on.
