Clifford Chance Frankfurt partner Andreas Dietzel has been elected to succeed Hans-Josef Schneider as managing partner of the firm’s German practice.

Dietzel, who has been a partner at Clifford Chance since 1993, has headed the firm’s German corporate practice since 2002. He said of his appointment: “I’d like to thank the partners for the trust they’ve placed in me. Market changes create opportunities for those law firms prepared to take the initiative. As a result, in the current environment, I see significant potential for Clifford Chance to further expand its market position.”
Russell-Cooke has promoted contentious probate specialist Alison Regan to partner. She joined Russell-Cooke as a trainee in September 2000 and heads the firm’s private client group alongside Richard Frimston.
Weightmans has welcomed corporate partner Clare Sellars to its London office. She joins from McDermott Will & Emery, where she was a counsel.
Withers has appointed Alana Lowe-Petraske as an associate in its charity and philanthropy group. She joins from Bates Wells & Braithwaite, where she was a solicitor in the charity and social enterprise group.
Veale Wasbrough Vizards has appointed education associate Tracey Eldridge-Hinmers, charity law associate Martha Burnige and employment associate Judith Rhule. Eldridge-Hinmers joins from Ormerods Solicitors in Croydon, where she worked for six years and was head of education. Burnige joins from Stone King Sewell, where she worked for four years. in-house employment solicitor.
FBC Manby Bowdler has strengthened its Shrewsbury litigation team with the appointment of solicitor Sally Burroughs. She joins from Nicholls & Co, where she was head of litigation.
Moore Blatch has appointed Edward Whittington as a solicitor in its commercial property department. He joins from Horsey Lightly Solicitors, where he was a solicitor.
Optima Legal has appointed Maggie Batts to the role of associate solicitor within the firm’s professional negligence team. Qualifying in 1998, Maggie has worked at Wragge & Co, Beachcroft and Vodafone’s in-house legal team. Previously she was at the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors, where she managed professional conduct and standard issues.
Stowe Family Law has appointed James Thornton as a partner in its Harrogate office. Thornton joins from Lupton Fawcett, where he was a director in the family department. He was previously head of the family department at Fox Hayes and has also held previous positions at Leeds firms Ison Harrison and Blacks.
Halliwells has appointed Heather Caddy as an assistant in its construction team. Caddy joins from HBJ Gateley Wareing, where she qualified into the contentious construction team in 2008.
Bingham has expanded its investment management group in Hong Kong with the addition of Anne-Marie Godfrey as partner. She joins from Maples & Calder, where she was an associate.
Dechert has announced that Thomas Vartanian, David Ansell and Robert Ledig have joined the firm as partners in its Washington DC office. All three were previously partners at Fried Frank Harris Shriver & Jacobson, where Vartanian served as chair of the financial institutions transaction group. The trio have worked together for more than 25 years.
Fried Frank Harris Shriver & Jacobson has announced that Jay Aggarwal and Marianne Cheng have been promoted to international counsel in Hong Kong. Both are lawyers in the firm’s corporate department in Hong Kong.
Conyers Dill & Pearman has announced the promotion of five lawyers to partner across its British Virgin Islands, Bermuda, Hong Kong and Singapore offices, and corporate, litigation and insurance practices. They are: Richard Evans in the BVI litigation department; Jeffrey Elkinson in the Bermuda litigation department; Richard Hall in the Hong Kong corporate practice; Michael Frith in the Bermuda insurance department; and Kung Whooi Phing in the Singapore office in the corporate and commercial practice.
John Virgo, a financial services specialist, is to take up a tenancy at Outer Temple Chambers. He has experience in claims arising from financial mis-selling and negligent investment advice including mis-selling of personal pension plans, with-profits annuities, endowment policies, lifetime mortgages, permanent health insurance policies and a wide range of investment products. He maintains his position at Guildhall Chambers.
