Davenport Lyons has taken on Paul Hicks as a partner in its real estate practice.
Move of the week
He joins from Eversheds. He is the seventh senior appointment to the team in less than 12 months and is joined by his assistant, Angharad Davies. Hicks advises on a wide range of commercial property issues and has particular expertise in the retail and leisure sectors.
¨ Morgan Lewis has confirmed that Matthew Howse, a partner with 17 years’ experience in the media, financial services, insurance and legal industries, and his associates will join its labour and employment practice in London. They join from the London office of Dewey & LeBoeuf.
¨ Coffin Mew has taken on Liz Cheaney as its human resources director. Prior to joining Coffin Mew, Cheaney worked as an HR consultant advising a range of businesses in the manufacturing and service sectors.
¨ Postlethwaite has announced that David Reuben has joined the firm as share plans director from DLA Piper, where he was a partner. He has more than 15 years’ experience of advising on management tax issues.
¨ Veale Wasbrough Vizards has welcomed Martha Burnige as an associate based in the London office. She joins from Stone King Sewell, where she was also an associate. She originally trained at Nabarro and specialises in charity law, with particular expertise in governance issues.
¨ Michelmores has announced the arrival of Richard Cobb, who joins as a partner from Bond Pearce, where he most recently led the corporate finance team in Devon. He previously worked at Olswang in London for 10 years.
¨ Senior associate Michael Feakes has joined Bond Pearce’s specialist property damage recovery team Surr+. He joins from Beachcroft, where he was an associate.
¨ Berrymans Lace Mawer has announced the appointment of partner Aidan Carr. He joins the firm’s Manchester office from Rowlands Solicitors, where he was senior partner and head of regulatory and criminal litigation.
¨ IBB Solicitors has bolstered its family department with the appointment of partner and head of department Richard Phillips and senior solicitor Roopa Ahluwalia. Phillips joins from Irwin Mitchell and was previously head of family at Matthew Arnold & Baldwin. Ahluwalia joins from Taylor Walton and has experience representing clients in divorce and in ancillary relief proceedings.
¨ Birketts has announced the arrival of Georgia Maltezou and the return of Lisa Wortley to its shipping and logistics team based in Ipswich. Maltezou joins Birketts from the Greek office of Skuld. She has experience of personal injury claims. Birketts has taken on Wortley as an associate to work on speed and consumption claims.
¨ Greenwoods Solicitors has revealed that Peter Crossland has joined the firm as a partner. Based in Manchester, he was previously at Irwin Mitchell, where he was a partner for 20 years, specialising in defending personal injury claims.
¨ Weightmans has welcomed assistant solicitor Matthew Lake to its commercial dispute resolution and insolvency team. He will complement the existing Liverpool offering and advise clients in the region on property litigation matters. He joins from Walsall-based firm Hadens, where he was an associate.
¨ Irwin Mitchell has taken on Oliver Martin, who joins as a partner in the commercial property team. He joins from Shoosmiths, where he was a partner in the planning team. David Goy joins as a newly qualified solicitor, having trained with the firm.
¨ Irwin Mitchell’s business and private client team has taken on associate Katriona Swan to head up its public law team in Leeds. She joins from the Independent Police Complaints Commission, where she worked as a senior lawyer.
¨ DLA Piper has hired construction specialist Gareth Parry as its new head of construction and engineering in Scotland. He now leads a team of six construction and engineering lawyers within the Scottish real estate practice, which is led by partner Drew Wallace. Prior to joining DLA Piper Parry was a partner and UK head of construction and engineering at McGrigors.
Asia and Middle east
¨ King & Spalding has announced the appointment of Jawad Ali as managing partner of the firm’s Middle East offices in Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Riyadh. Ali was global deputy head of Islamic finance, a role he retains as managing partner. Philip Weems, who served as managing partner of the Middle East offices, is returning to the firm’s Texas office in Houston and continuing in his role as co-head of King & Spalding’s global energy practice.
¨ Mayer Brown has revealed that former US Trade Representative Susan Schwab has joined its Washington DC office as a strategic adviser. In this new position, Schwab will work across practice groups and offices to counsel the firm’s clients on a wide range of issues and policies.
¨ Bingham McCutchen has added Lizzie Baird as a partner in its broker-dealer group. Baird, who joins Bingham’s Washington DC office from O’Melveny & Myers, focuses her practice on securities enforcement defence, internal investigations, and regulatory and corporate counselling.
¨ Ogier has announced the appointment of Ray Ng as a senior member of its litigation team in the British Virgin Islands. Ng joins Ogier from Crown Office Chambers, where he practised for the past 12 years.
