US firm Paul Hastings Janofsky & Walker is launching a secondment programme for its associates across the firm, starting with a pilot scheme this summer.
If the pilot is successful it is hoped that the exchange programme can be rolled out to the firm's associates next year, including those in the firm's London office.
Firm chairman Seth Zachary said: "The scheme would ensure our associates are exposed to Paul Hastings' collaborative culture and would learn early on in their careers what it takes to adapt to the different business environments in the countries in which we operate."
The programme is essentially an exchange, with year-long secondments possible only if there is an associate in an overseas office with a similar skill set who is willing to trade places with an applicant.
The firm said the selection process would be "rigorous" and that candidates would have to put forward a credible business case to be considered.
The programme will be available to lawyers with the equivalent of three to five years' PQE.
Up until now the firm has operated an ad hoc secondment programme. For example, there is a Los Angeles-based associate currently in the London office for six months.
Paul Hastings has 18 offices, eight of which are outside the US.
