Oliver Bretz Firm: Clifford Chance Partner since: 2002 Educated: Cambridge University Key clients: Barclays, Telefonica, Citigroup, European Payment Council, Publishers Association, Heinz, Shell
Clifford Chance staked its competition hopes on young up-and-comer Oliver Bretz. It was a gamble, but he has proven his worth time and time again. Most recently he won the main advisory role to the European Payments Council. The industry body, which represents more than 7,000 banks, is working to comply with the European Commission’s proposed Directive for a new Legal Framework for Payments. Bretz also had a small win in December 2005 when the Office of Fair Trading referred the merger of bookstore chains Waterstone’s and Ottakar’s to the Competition Commission. Clifford Chance has been representing the Publishers Association in the ongoing case.
