Tulkinghorn happened to be taking a virtual stroll though Baker & McKenzie's website the other day (it was quiet in the office, okay) and clicked on a random partner's email link.
Lo and behold, the great man was confronted with the following disclaimer: "Before You Send Us E-mail. CAUTION - Before you proceed, please note: Your communications with us through this website will not create a lawyer-client relationship with us."
The warning, which sent shockwaves through Tulkinghorn's tender sensitivities, went on to prohibit any potential correspondents sending "any information that you or anyone else considers to be confidential or secret unless we have first agreed to be your lawyers in that matter".
On investigating the matter, it transpired the paranoia was all part of Bakers' recent move to become a Swiss Verein. By the way, Hogan & Hartson's disclaimer (installed at the behest of its ethics committee) is even longer. Does that make it even more paranoid?
