Papers agree ‘orgy’ settlement with Ashley Cole

Teacher Stern Selby and specialist advocacy firm David Price Solicitors have secured apologies and damages for footballer Ashley Cole and DJ Masterstepz after The Sun and The News of the World published articles allegedly linking the pair to a “gay sex orgy”.

Graham Shear of Teacher Stern Selby filed the claim for Cole in March after the tabloids printed stories and images alleging that two unnamed Premiership footballers and an unnamed DJ had been involved in the orgy.

Although neither Cole or David Price client Masterstepz was named, the claimants’ solicitors said that the articles wrongly identified them in connection with the story, which was a popular discussion topic online.

After the threat of court action, the newspapers agreed to settle the case by paying damages and printing apologies. A statement was also read out in the High Court this morning (26 June).

Farrer & Co represented the newspapers.

Shear reverted to the internet as an evidence-gathering measure after the claim was launched, seeking potential witnesses through an online questionnaire.
