City employment boutique Palmer Wade has landed work in a landmark case for trainee midwives today (Monday 4 October).
Partner Joanna Wade is acting for three women whose bursaries were stopped when they took maternity leave during midwifery training in the hearing at the Employment Appeals Tribunal (EAT).
In April the trainees lost their first employment tribunal hearing. However the tribunal was highly critical of the bursary scheme which allows for 60 days paid sick leave but stops payments during maternity leave.
If the applicants are successful in the EAT, student nurses and other NHS trainees could benefit.
Wade is instructing Old Square Chambers’ Tess Gill as counsel. The case is also supported by health care union UNISON, the Royal College of Midwives, the Maternity Alliance and the Equal Opportunities Commission.
