Olswang overhauls management for post-Goldstein revolution

Olswang is preparing to distance itself from the Jonathan Goldstein years by installing a radical new management structure aimed at promoting national and international growth.

The firm is to reintroduce the role of managing partner from 1 May. and appointed former international strategy partner David Stewart to the role. Stewart was appointed following an uncontested election before Easter.

Chief operating officer of eight years Kevin Munslow is to take over from Goldstein as chief executive, a role that will include operational and financial management. Senior partner Mark Devereux will continue in the role he has held since 1998.

“Jonathan is a great friend of the firm and has done a magnificent job,” said Devereux, “but we are growing up and we need a management structure that reflects Olswang’s next stage.”

That is likely to include significant expansion, both at home and abroad, Devereux added.

Goldstein, for nine years the public face of Olswang, told senior management he had to decided to leave the firm at the end of his third three-year term in January.

One of the best-known names in the UK legal market, Goldstein became chief executive in 1998 and has been closely identified with Olswang’s rapid growth over the past decade.

The creation of a new three-man team to run the firm coincides with the creation of two new managerial boards, a move aimed at allowing a greater number of partners a say in the running of the firm.

Olswang is creating a new management board chaired by Munslow which will include the three senior managers and practice group heads.

There is also to be a new strategy board, chaired by Stewart, which will focus on Olswang’s longer-term strategic aims. In his former role of international strategy partner, Stewart was intsrumental in securing Olswang’s strategic alliance with US firm Greenberg Traurig. His appointment to managing partner and as chair of the new strategy board is a clear signal that Olswang is looking to ramp up its international coverage which, until now, has lagged behind that of many of its rivals.
