OFT appoints new GCThe Office of Fair Trading (OFT) has promoted former Slaughter and May lawyer Frances Barr to the roles of general counsel and head of legal profession at the watchdog.

Barr is currently a legal director and takes up her new post on 1 August to replace Brian McHenry, who stood down last year to become a deacon in the Church of England.

Barr, who trained and worked at Slaughter and May until 1998 when she joined the OFT, said she takes on her new role at an exciting and challenging time for the regulator.

“In an increasingly litigious environment, my background and experience of both the competition law regime and the public law context will enable the OFT to ensure that it can deliver high impact outcomes which are legally robust,” said Barr.

“In my role as head of profession, I want to develop the legal talent within the OFT and recruit to build a dynamic team recognised for its legal excellence and able to deliver the OFT’s mission.’

On Barr’s promotion, OFT chief executive John Fingleton said: She brings a great deal of experience in both the private and public sector, and will play a vital role in helping the OFT deliver high impact outcomes for consumers.’
