OFGEM APPOINTS FIRST HEAD OF LEGAL

Leading competition and energy law partner Charles Bankes will join the Office of Gas and Electricity Markets (OFGEM) for two years on secondment to establish the role.

The regulator currently has a panel of four firms – Simmons & Simmons, Denton Wilde Sapte, Nabarro Nathanson and Maclay Murray & Spens in Scotland.

Bankes says he doesn't anticipate changing the panel, but he admits the office will be undergoing a lot of upheaval in the next two years as a result of policy changes redesigning its role.

OFGEM is the result of a merger between the electricity regulator OFFER and the gas watchdog OFGAS last year
