In the UK, Mitchell is best-known as the man who chaired the negotiations that ultimately brought peace to Northern Ireland via the 1998 Good Friday Accord. He is expected to travel to the Middle East as soon as possible to begin negotiations aimed at a resolution of the current conflict.
Mitchell, who joined DLA Piper in 2003 has had a varied career. Between 1954 and 1956 Mitchell was stationed in Berlin as an officer in the US Army Counter-Intelligence Corps.
In the 1960s he was a trial lawyer in the Department of Justice in Washington, DC while later in his career he served as chairman of the board of several major corporations, including the Walt Disney Company. He entered the US Senate in 1980.
Mitchell has previous direct experience of the Middle East conflict, having been asked by former President Bill Clinton to lead a commission aimed at ending Israeli-Palestinian attacks.
