Norwegian trio launch in Singapore

Niche shipping firms Nordisk Defence Club and Vogt & Wiig have joined leading Norwegian law firm Wikborg Rein by launching in Singapore.

Shipping firm Nordisk is the latest to open. It is the 117year-old firm’s first office outside its home city of Oslo.

Last month saw shipping finance specialist Vogt open its doors, while Norwegian giant Wikborg set up its first Singapore office last December.

Nordisk managing director Egil André Berglund said Singapore and Norway have enjoyed a strong relationship in the shipping business for many years, with 60 Norwegian companies in the country.

Berglund added: “Our clients had increasingly sent feedback saying they would like us to have a presence in Singapore to assist in urgent matters as well as to provide regular day-to-day advice. It was this impetus that led to the opening of our first international office.”

Peter Ong, chairman of the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore, which has control over the major shipping routes in the province, said the trio of law firms moving in establishes fully the Norwegian presence in Singapore.

“Recent months have seen the North of England P&I Club and the Norwegian Hull Club announce their intentions to set up offices here and, along with the trio of new launches, this shows a true solidification of Norwegian and Singaporean relations,” said Ong.
