Norton Rose has pushed its newly qualified (NQ) salary up by just over 1 per cent following its latest salary review.
NQs are now being paid £60,000 compared to £59,000 last year, while remuneration for first year trainees has remained unchanged at £37,000.
Head of HR Lak Purewal said: “As part of the review we set out to ensure that our salaries remain competitive in the market and that salary increases are awarded to reflect the individual contributions of the associates. We’re satisfied that our review has met both of these objectives”.
Norton Rose no longer has fixed salaries for associates due to it abandoning the lockstep pay structure in 2008 in favour of a merit-based system.
The news comes shortly after Slaughter and May announced that its associate salaries would rise by an average of two per cent, following its bi-annual review, though trainee and NQ salaries have been frozen.
Allen & Overy (A&O) and Linklaters also confirmed that they are freezing salary bands but are allowing associates to receive pay rises by progressing to the next level (read more). NQ salaries at A&O and Linklaters are £61,000 and £61,500 respectively.
