Norton Rose has won a key role on the EURO1.48bn takeover bid by Ryanair for Aer Lingus.

Corporate finance partner Mark Bankes is leading the firm’s team on the defence of the bid, which was yesterday (5 October) rejected by the Aer Lingus board.

Bankes, along with corporate finance partner Jill Gauntlett, led the City firm’s team on the recent admission to the Irish and London stock exchanges.

Now the pair have successfully converted that role into a key position on what looks set to be one of the most high-profile takeover battles of the year.

The Irish Government, which retains a majority stake in Aer Lingus, has said it would atttempt to try and block the bid in court on competition grounds.

Norton Rose is advising Aer Lingus along with Irish heavyweight Arthur Cox. Irish firm A&L Goodbody is advising Ryanair.
