The London boroughs of Camden and Islington have emerged from the capital's recruitment crisis and appointed new legal chiefs.
Islington, which has been looking for a new head of legal services since April, after incumbent Louise Round was promoted to director of corporate resources, has hired Debra Norman, who is currently deputy borough solicitor at the London Borough of Brent.
Meanwhile, Camden, which lies to the west of Islington, was seeking a new head of legal services after director of law and administration Alison Lowton left last November. It has hired Andrew Maughan, the assistant director of legal at the London Borough of Bexley.
However, the hires have not eased London's local authority legal hiring crisis, which was first reported by The Lawyer (8 May).
Although Maughan's position was assistant director of legal at Bexley, his was the borough's most senior legal post, answering directly to the chief executive, meaning Bexley will enter the war for talent.
The London Borough of Hackney, Islington's neighbour to the east and one of the host boroughs of the 2012 Olympic Games, is still looking to fill the borough solicitor vacancy created by the sacking of Meic Sullivan-Gould as director of law and democratic services (The Lawyer, 16 April), a role the council has since abolished.
In Haringey, which neighbours Camden, Islington and Hackney to the north, the head of legal services and monitoring officer role remains vacant after Davina Fiore left for a post as head of legal services at the London Fire & Emergency Planning Authority in January (The Lawyer, 5 January).
In addition, the London Borough of Enfield, to the north of Haringey, is also in the hunt for a borough solicitor.
