General counsel Mark Chapman, who has been in the role for a year, also retained SJ Berwin, formerly a member of the main list, and Osborne Clarke to handle employment issues.
On the previous list, which had been in place for two years, Osborne Clarke and Burges Salmon dealt with employment issues. Burges Salmon was the only firm that was not retained for the coming two years.
It is understood that, although Chapman intends to pass all of Nomura’s external legal work to the firms on the list, he will go off-panel when necessary.
Clifford Chance was the only magic circle firm not to be used by the bank and it is believed that, although there has been a number of additions this time round, the legal team saw little merit in adding the firm at this stage.
Nomura turned to Freshfields for advice on its acquisition of Lehman Brothers’ investment banking business in Europe, the Middle East and Asia, with corporate partners Stephen Revell and Mark Kalderon leading.
Chapman, who works alongside ;head ;of transaction legal Clare Jones and head of corporate legal Christopher Barlow, succeeded former general counsel Terence Kyle, who retired last year. Chapman has been with Nomura since 2000.
