No5 Chambers silk Gareth Evans QC has been appointed leader of the Midlands Circuit.
Evans, who succeeds Peter Joyce QC of 1 High Pavement Chambers, will serve as the circuit leader until 2011.
Evans said a fundamental aim will be to maintain the size and strength of the Midlands bar in a climate where Government funding cutbacks were having a negative effect.
Evans said: “This situation needs to be addressed, and the work of the circuit in bringing the region’s barristers together and representing the Midlands bar at a national level is now more important than ever before.”

Inclusion
It's a shame that the Midland's Circuit has therefore decided not to include employed barristers. Given that employed barristers are the potential clients of our self-employed colleagues, one would have thought that the networking opportunities presented by including employed barristers in circuit life would have been welcomed by those selling their direct access credentials. Let's hope that the revolution taking place in our profession leads to and end of the 'them and us' culture.
