Nixon Peabody has announced staff cuts totally 56 across the firm’s US network.
As first revealed on US legal blog abovethelaw.com, the US firm has axed 20 lawyers and 36 support staff in a bid to combat the pressure of the ailing economy.
Nixon Peabody managing partner Richard Langan said: “Our people are our most valuable asset and the decision to downsize is hard. Our values and culture set us apart from other firms and we are all deeply affected by today’s events. Everyone leaving us is being treated fairly and with compassion.”
Langan added that Nixon Peabody remains to be a strong firm, focused on long-term profitable growth.
He said: “Our success today and the legacy we create for the future is due to the exceptional team of people we have across all of our offices and practices around the world.”
Nixon Peabody made significant investment into its US practice in 2008.
Last year The Lawyer reported on the firm hiring more than 60 lawyers from dissolved firm Thelen Reid Brown Raysman & Steiner (6 November).

Americanism
Why do we have to use American Innuendo. "Downsize" why not substitute binned. Anybody who has been a lawyer ,knows that firms whip staff until they are on the point of exhaustion. Extract as fees until the pips squeak and then dump them when times get bad. This is not a dig at Nixon Peabody,as I have never of them. However if partners, in general ,stopped asset stripping by way of drawings; there may be enough in the pot to look after the poor sods who are now been thrown on the scrap heap
