The first trans-Atlantic merger of the year is going ahead as partners at Nicholson Graham & Jones and Kirkpatrick & Lockhart have voted through a tie-up.

The merger will go live on 1 January 2005, creating a 950-lawyer firm spanning 10 US cities and London. The firm will be known as Kirkpatrick & Lockhart Nicholson Graham with Kirkpatrick’s Peter Kalis and Michael Johns of Nicholson Graham serving as joint chairmen.

The combination has been cemented just ahead of DLA’s ambitious merger with Piper Rudnick and Gray Cary Ware & Freidenrich. DLA is due to ballot its partners on 23 October.
