Kirkland & Ellis private equity partner Raymond McKeeve is set to join client and property tycoon Robert Tchenguiz as an investment professional in mid-April.
Earlier this month (4 March), www.thelawyer.com revealed that McKeeve was leaving Kirkland two years after he arrived to great fanfare along with colleague Graham White. The pair had previously been partners at magic circle firm Linklaters.
Tchenguiz has been one of McKeeve’s main clients for around six years and they have been widely tipped to join forces since McKeeve’s break with Kirkland was confirmed.
In his new role as principal with Tchenguiz, McKeeve will not undertake any legal activities, instead focusing purely on investments. It is expected that Kirkland will remain as Tchenguiz’s main legal adviser, with White taking over the relationship.
McKeeve, who will join Tchenguiz as one of four investment principals, was unavailable for comment.
McKeeve has built up a notable portfolio of deals during his time acting for Tchenguiz, having acted on the latter’s buyout of Odeon while still at Linklaters. Along with German investment bank WestLB’s principal finance group and Entertainment Film Distributors, Tchenguiz paid Cinven £431m for the cinema chain in the first private equity deal Linklaters completed for the tycoon. The magic circle firm had previously handled only Tchenguiz’s property transactions.
On joining Kirkland, McKeeve and White advised R20, adviser to Tchenguiz and the Tchenguiz Family Trust, on its £180m joint acquisition of Menzies Hotel Group, as well as acting on unsuccessful deals such as the £550m auction of the Alska pubs portfolio by Punch Taverns.
