Middle East firm Al Tamimi & Company is launching a dedicated sports practice with the hire of the general counsel of Abu Dhabi’s Yas Marina Circuit.
Steve Bainbridge, a former Al Tamimi associate, has rejoined the firm after three years at the motor racing circuit to head up the new venture.
The sports law practice will operate across the region, although Bainbridge will be based in the Qatari capital of Doha.
Bainbridge said the catalyst for the launch was recent significant growth in sports law across the Middle East. He said while the headline event approaching was the FIFA 2022 World Cup, to be hosted by Qatar, there was a lot of other activity across a range of sports.
“In a short period of time we’re seeing the full life-cycle of sports events,” Bainbridge said.
He added that Al Tamimi had identified a core group of eight to 10 lawyers who had already done a significant amount of sports work, and they would form the nucleus of the team going forward.
