It’s just over a year now since Dewey & LeBoeuf imploded so spectacularly, forcing its lawyers around the world to look for new homes.
Arguably one of the collapsed firm’s more successful offices outside the US was Moscow. That office, led by Russia veteran Brian Zimbler, was snapped up by Morgan Lewis & Bockius, which previously had no presence in the CIS. Since then, Morgan Lewis Moscow has been fighting for – and winning its share of – plum mandates in Russia, such as in the booming debt capital markets sector.
Now Morgan Lewis has made its first Russia hire, taking a team of finance lawyers from Gide Loyrette Nouel. The team is headed by Russian partner Grigory Marinichev and includes Gide senior associate Konstantin Kochetkov, who joins the US firm as a partner, as well as eight associates.
It’s a nice addition to Morgan Lewis’s Russian presence, fitting in well with the firm’s current US, English and Russian law expertise in Moscow. The moves are also proof that Russian lateral hiring is picking up; Squire Sanders has also recruited, from Goltsblat BLP. Expect more in the future.
