Latham & Watkins has announced the hire of Allen & Overy (A&O) German capital markets partner Okko Behrends in a boost for the US firm’s Frankfurt office.
Behrends, who has been a partner at A&O since 2000, focuses on international capital markets transactions, including covered bonds, structured debt instruments and OTC derivatives.
He advises a range of clients including banks, insurance companies, securities clearing providers and counterparties.
Latham & Watkins’ Frankfurt managing partner said Behrends’ client base was complementary to the firm’s German practice. Oberbracht added that Behrends’ hire came at a time when financial institutions were facing a “complex web of regulatory issues” thanks to EU initiatives and Behrends would help the firm build its European capability.
Behrends is the first significant hire for Latham & Watkins in Germany for some time, although the firm promoted litigator Christine Gärtner to the partnership in Frankfurt last year (14 November 2012). More recently, the firm turned to another magic circle firm to boost its London funds practice with Clifford Chance’s global private equity head David Walker (8 April 2013).
