A former partner in Cobbetts’ Birmingham office is launching a boutique firm close to Frankfurt in Germany.
Jan Becher was a partner in Cobbetts’ commercial team in Birmingham between 2005 and 2011, running the firm’s German desk (18 January 2005). More recently, he spent a year and a half as corporate counsel at watchmaker Swatch in Switzerland, and the same amount of time as a counsel at German firm Graf von Westphalen.
Becher has teamed up with notary public Rüdiger Rattay to launch the new firm, Rattay & Becher. The firm will be based in Königstein, about 15 miles out of Frankfurt, and will seek to work for entrepreneurial and family-owned businesses, high-net worth individuals, foundations and non-profit organisations, particularly advising on succession issues, real estate, litigation and corporate matters.
“It’s something I’ve always wanted to do,” said Becher of establishing his own practice. “I’ve got plenty of contacts with all my years abroad that not many people have.”
He added that Rattay & Becher would be able to operate nationally and internationally as clients were happy to deal with their lawyers by email or phone, and would be able to compete with Frankfurt practices in its core areas.
Becher said he and Rattay wanted to expand the firm.
