All the latest partner hires and other appointments within Continental European firms and offices.
Sorainen has recruited competition lawyer Ieva Azanda as a partner and head of the Latvian competition and regulatory team. Azanda has moved from Latvia firm Spigulis Kukainis & Azanda.
Investment management company CBRE Global Investors has promoted its deputy EMEA general counsel Anja Ijlstra to the position of general counsel for the EMEA region (21 January 2014). Ijlstra replaces Fabrice Rochu, who passed away in November 2013. She will sit on the European management board for the company.
Belgian firm Liedekerke Wolters Waelbroeck Kirkpatrick has strengthened its IP/IT capabilities with the recruitment of Etienne Kairis, Bernard Vanbrabant and two associates from Loyens & Loeff. Kairis will head Liedekerke’s IP/IT practice and joins the firm as a partner, while Vanbrabant becomes of counsel.

Schoenherr has promoted competition partner Volker Weiss to its equity, with Weiss moving to Brussels to head up the firm’s EU and competition law capability from Belgium. Weiss joined Schoenherr in 2003 and was promoted to the partnership in 2008.
Gide Loyrette Nouel has added a pair of restructuring partners from Dentons to its Paris restructuring practice (16 January 2014). Partners Gabriel Sonier and Caroline Texier joined Dentons legacy firm Salans in 2012 from Sonier’s boutique Sonier & Associés. Sonier’s experience includes advsing companies such as Virgin Stores, Eurotunnel and Omnium Finance on restructuring issues.
Gide has also promoted 19 lawyers to the new status of counsel across its Algiers, Brussels and Paris offices. The promotions come in nine practice areas. Each candidate was unanimously backed by by his or her practice group, received individual sponsorship, and was approved by a commission comprising four partners. The status has been conferred for an initial period of three years.
Dentons has hired real estate lawyer Alexandre Poupard as a partner in Paris from Allen & Overy, where he was a counsel. Poupard specialises in real estate M&A.
Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer has turned to French corporate heavyweight Bredin Prat to strengthen its Paris M&A team, hiring partner Olivier Rogivue (9 January 2014). Rogivue was an associate at Bredin Prat’s best friend Slaughter and May before joining the firm in 2006, and is dual-qualified in France and England and Wales. He will be followed to Freshfields by Bredin Prat corporate lawyer Florent Mazeron, who will become a counsel when he arrives at the magic circle firm in February.
French boutique Lacourte Raquin Tatar has bolstered its team with two new partners, including the Royal Bank of Scotland’s (RBS) head of legal for France (20 January 2014). Cédric Bonnet, who left Gide Loyrette Nouel in 2005 to take responsibility for RBS’s French operations, has become a partner in the banking and finance team at Lacourte Raquin. The firm has also recruited Gide real estate finance associate Emilie Capron as a partner.
Linklaters has appointed Lionel Vuidard as a partner in charge of its Paris employment practice. Vuidard was previously a counsel at Latham & Watkins, and will develop the firm’s French labour law advisory and litigation team.
Herbert Smith Freehills has recruited Julien Vandenbussche as an of counsel in its corporate team. Vandenbussche, who specialises in investment fund structuring and finance law, was previously a lawyer at Gide Loyrette Nouel.
JeantetAssociés has promoted four lawyers to its partnership. Corporate lawyers Anne Toupenay-Schueller and Vincent Netter bring the number of M&A partners to 10, while Déborah David and Olivier Angotti double the number of partners in the employment team.
Olswang has strengthened its German finance and banking practice with the arrival of former Deutsche Bundesbank board member Hans Reckers to its Berlin office. Reckers will join the international finance team as senior of counsel and will focus on banking regulation, alternative financiers and debt funds. The firm has also hired Orrick Herrington & Sutcliffe German IP/IT head Andreas Splittgerber as a partner. Splittgerber was formerly a counsel at Orrick.
Heuking Kühn Lüer Wojtek has appointed Weil Gotshal & Manges restructuring partner Arnold Büssemaker as an equity partner in the firm’s Munich office. Büssemaker specialises in corporate restructuring, distressed debt, distressed real estate and distressed M&A.
German multi-disciplinary firm Rödl & Partner has strengthened its presence in Italy with the hire of the Milan office of local M&A firm BLF Studio Legale (13 January 2014). Led by partners Daniele Bonvicini and Alessandro Borelli, the move adds six lawyers to Rödl’s Italian operations. Rödl already has four offices in Italy, in Bolzano, Padova and Rome as well as Milan, with a team of lawyers, tax specialists, accountants and auditors.
Employment boutique Assistenza Legale is launching an office in the Sicilian city of Palermo. The office will be headed by local lawyers Alberto Gattuccio, Rosario Salvato and Giampiero Saverino.
Egorov Puginsky Afanasiev & Partners has appointed Victoria Burkovskaya as a partner in its white collar crime practice. Burkovskaya was previously a counsel at the firm. She focuses on corruption and financial crimes, criminal proceedings and anti-corruption compliance as well as on personal data protection and cryptography.
Lalive has recruited two partners and promoted two lawyers in its Zurich office. Philipp Habegger and Marc Veit join the firm from Walder Wyss, where both were partners in the arbitration and litigation team. Simone Nadelhofer and Werner Jahnel, both previously counsel in Zurich, have been promoted to the partnership.
A partner from Turkish firm Mehmet Gün & Partners, Elvan Sevi Firat, and Mehmet Feridun Izgi, who was formerly an in-house lawyer in the energy sector, have teamed up to launch boutique Firat-Izgi. The firm will focus mainly on advising life sciences, healthcare, energy and natural resources, automotive, environmental, biosafety and direct selling industries.
