All the latest partner hires and other appointments within Continental European firms and offices.
Dutch firm Van Doorne is reopening its London office, six years after pulling out from the City, and is hiring three partners from rival Boekel de Nerée (11 April 2014). The trio of partners joining from Boekel includes the firm’s current London office head Angelique Thiele, real estate finance partner Ariën van Heesen and commercial contracts specialist Lisette Bieleveld.
The Dutch legal market has gained yet another boutique with the launch of Biesheuvel Jansen Advocaten by a team of four senior associates from Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer, Linklaters and Stibbe (9 April 2014). The firm was launched by former Freshfields lawyer Quirijn Biesheuvel, ex-Linklaters lawyer Jaap Kuster, and Inge Timmerman and Rutger Jansen who both previously worked at Stibbe in Amsterdam and London.
Dutch firm Stek Advocaten has hired two lawyers from NautaDutilh. Thijs Lommen will join the firm as a partner in the corporate finance team, while senior associate Judith Edixhoven also joins the finance team.
K&L Gates has hired Ignasi Guardans as a partner in its Brussels office. Guardans is a former member of the European and Spanish parliaments and was most recently a policy consultant and project manager for several large European companies and organisations.
Houthoff Buruma has appointed Michel Klijn as a partner in its projects and projects finance team, effective 1 April.
French firm Racine has hired Melanie Verroken as a partner in its Brussels office. IP specialist Verroken was most recently a senior associate at CMS De Backer.
Central & Eastern Europe
Austrian firm Schoenherr has appointed Stefan Kuehteubl as a partner and the head of the firm’s employment practice as of July 2014. Kuehteubl previously worked at Schoenherr between 1999 and 2004, before joining local firm Engelbrecht & Partner, where he became partner in 2008.
Morgan Lewis has hired Bird & Bird corporate partner Stephen Walters (7 April 2014). Walters, who was formerly one of Dewey & LeBoeuf’s most respected partners in Paris, joined Bird & Bird prior to the US firm’s collapse in May 2012. He specialises in public and private M&A, particularly in the energy, financial services and life sciences sectors. At both of his former firms Walters divided his time between London and Paris.
McDermott Will & Emery has recruited Dechert partner Emmanuelle Trombe as a corporate partner in Paris. Trombe focuses her practice on the pharmaceutical, medical device and related healthcare industries.
De Pardieu Brocas Maffei has promoted Ségolène Coiffet to counsel in its restructuring and litigation team. Coiffet joined the firm in 2008.
Taylor Wessing has elected Hamburg IP partner Andreas Meissner as its new German managing partner, following the sudden decision of Florian Ranft to step down after just one year in the job (8 April 2014). Meissner will also take up a place on Taylor Wessing’s international management board. He takes up his new role with immediate effect.
King & Spalding has recruited Werner Meier as a partner in its Frankfurt office. Meier joins King & Spalding from Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton in Frankfurt, where he was a finance and restructuring partner.
Rolf Corsten is joining Luther as of counsel in Düsseldorf. Corsten was responsible for the finances of the city of Viersen for more than 20 years as the city’s treasurer. He also worked in a leading position in the finance department and financial management company of the German Association of Cities.
Pflüger Rechtsanwälte lawyer Thomas Koeppen has left the employment firm to establish KPN Legal, a boutique firm with offices in Frankfurt and Berlin. The KPN Legal team consists of Gundula Lehr, Boris Zimmermann and Jens Baldtschun. Lehr was most recently at CMS Hasche Sigle.
Dentons Spain has brought partner Antonio Alcolea Cantos on board to lead the firm’s public and regulatory law department in Madrid. Before joining Dentons, Antonio was counsel at Pérez-Llorca.
Cuatrecasas Gonçalves Pereira has promoted four new equity partners in the Lisbon, Madrid and San Sebastián offices. The new partners are finance and tax lawyers Fernando de Vicente in Madrid and Elisabeth Errasti in San Sebastián, litigator Rita Gouveia in Lisbon and Madrid corporate finance lawyer León Miguel López.
LK Shields has appointed Maples and Calder partner Liam Carney as a partner in its banking team. His expertise lies in lending and security, where he has acted for lenders on a wide variety of transactions.
Russia & CIS
Dentons has hired Baker Botts partner Dominic Pellew into its international arbitration group in Russia and London (7 April 2014). The partner, who is dual-qualified in the UK and France as well as being a Russian speaker, will join partners Liz Tout and Michelle Bradfield in London and Mikhail Ivanov in St Petersburg.
Ivan Smirnov has been appointed managing partner of the St Petersburg office of Egorov Puginsky Afanasiev & Partners. Smirnov joined Egorov Puginsky in 2011 as head of its regulatory department.
