Competition and EU partner Efthymios Bourtzalas has quit Ashurst’s Brussels outpost, just weeks after the exit of renowned partner Julian Ellison from the same group.
It is understood that Bourtzalas is set to join Bird & Bird’s office in the city, which is currently home to 10 partners.
The partner is thought to have held talks with Mayer Brown alongside Ellison, who jumped ship to the firm last month (6 February 2014). However, Bourtzalas ultimately took the decision to move independently to Bird & Bird.
Greek-qualified Bourtzalas has been a partner at Ashurst since 2007. He specialises in European Commission law including merger control, state aid, public procurement, and institutional and regulatory law, and has particular expertise in the Greek legal system.
Bourtzalas’ exit leaves eight partners in Ashurst’s Brussels office.
Ellison joined Mayer Brown’s antitrust and competition team last month after an approach from the firm. He had been a partner at Ashurst since 1989, and headed up its Brussels office for a number of years.
Within the last week, the firm has also witnessed the exit of private equity partner Karan Dinamani. In his new role Dinamani will be reunited with his former corporate head Stephen Lloyd, who left Ashurst to join Allen & Overy last December (11 December 2013).
Corporate partner Eavan Saunders Cole also left the Appold Street firm last November to take up a new role at William Fry in Dublin (11 November 2013).
Since then, Ashurst has taken on Linklaters debt capital markets partner Francis Kucera to boost its securities and derivatives practice (9 December 2013).
A spokesperson from Ashurst wished Bourtzalas well. Bird & Bird declined to comment.
