The Lawyer has launched the inaugural edition of Asia Pacific 150, an in-depth guide to the most exciting legal scene in the world.
The Lawyer Asia Pacific 150 is the first research report of its kind, examining the 50 largest global firms operating in the region as well as the 100 top independent firms headquartered there.
As its research shows there are now 9,207 lawyers sitting in the top 50 international firms in the Asia Pacific. Some 80 per cent of of them are at the offices of the top 20 firms in the region, 7,359 in total.
Many have been enjoying strong growth. It is not surprising that China, given its large population, claims to have the largest number of firms among the top 100, with 30 firms housing 12,700 lawyers. Chinese firms Yingke and Dacheng, together with sino-Australian firm King & Wood Mallesons, also sit on the top three spots on this year’s Asia Pacific 150 list.
As the world enters the so-called ‘Asian century’, in which the region is predicted to account for more than half of global GDP by the mid-21th century, the Asia Pacific is of strategic importance to the global legal profession.
